Another Year of Schmoozing for the Books!

Last Thursday, we schmoozed the night away at GenNEXT Ottawa’s 13th Annual Schmoozefest. The night was filled with great food, great company and great conversations. We had the chance to participate in the heart string wall initiative that served as an amazing visual reminder of the energy we can use to help solve Ottawa’s challenges through the GenNext Ottawa Giving Circles. Check out the heart strings time lapse video here:

The 2018 Thanksgiving Food Drive was a Success!

The Ottawa Food Bank has one goal: Help people get beyond hunger. This Thanksgiving weekend, the teams at Hendry Warren LLP and Transactions Inc. wanted to help and so we banded together, reached out to friends and family, and collected as many non-perishable food items and baby & personal products we could. We’re proud to say that the teams were able to gather a whopping 3,395lbs of items for the Ottawa Food Bank this year!

A huge, giant thank-you goes out to our friends, without whom none of this would be possible: Italfoods Ottawa, La Bottega Nicastro, and McKeen Metro Glebe.

Congratulations to Robin & Kyle!

While we thought that Robin Lawrence's love of all things accounting was pretty special, we must admit that her love for her now-husband, Kyle Schneider, trumps that. This couldn't have been more obvious at their beautiful wedding ceremony this past Saturday.

Congratulations to the newlyweds!

Business Before Nine

On Wednesday morning, members of the Hendry Warren team attended the Business Before Nine (BB9) breakfast hosted by the newly amalgamated Ottawa Board of Trade. The #BB9 breakfast series is always a great opportunity for us to connect with the greater Ottawa business community. This breakfast featured Erin Crowe, FCPA, FCA who shared some great insights on the lessons learned throughout her career. A reoccurring theme in Erin’s talk was the importance of having a strong business plan and we here at Hendry Warren could not agree more!

The 2018 Recruiting Season is in Full Swing

Team HW was out in full force last week, attending events for both Carleton University and University of Ottawa - L’Université d’Ottawa co-op programs. It was an absolute pleasure meeting all of the students and we are looking forward to seeing you again soon!

Thank you to Sprott Accounting Students' Association (SASA) and Telfer Accounting Club for hosting four great events.

Tips for Networking

As a co-op student, or recent graduate, you have heard it a million times, “Networking is a MUST for finding a good job.” Unfortunately, the thought of networking can be downright terrifying. Cue the cold-sweats and sleepless nights; you have no idea what to expect, how to prepare, or what to talk about with potential employers. But, we have good news, networking doesn’t have to be a bad experience! To help ease your pain, we asked our staff to share their networking tips and tricks.

Are you interested in practicing your networking skills? Come and meet the Hendry Warren team at the following events:

• University of Ottawa Wine & Cheese – Tuesday, September 18th at 6:30pm to 9:00pm

• Carleton University Six-Firm Meet & Greet – Tuesday, September 18th from 6:00pm to 8:00 pm

• Carleton University Wine & Cheese – Wednesday, September 19th from 6:00pm to 9:00pm

Good Luck to our 2018 CFE Writers!

On September 12, 13 and 14, seven of our staff members will be writing the Common Final Examination (CFE). The CFE is the final three-day examination in the Canadian CPA certification program requiring candidates to demonstrate depth and breadth of competency development in accordance with the CPA Competency Map. Upon successful completion of the challenging three-day exam, candidates are one step closer to attaining their CPA designation!

We wanted to wish good luck to our staff members and everyone else writing the CFE this year!

We've Been Busy!

Last Thursday, a few of our staff members attended GenNext's end-of-summer social hosted by House of Common.  This morning, we were up and networking before breakfast at the Mayor's Breakfast where we had the pleasure of listening to the Hon. Lisa MacLeod speak about her term in office and her involvement with the Ottawa community.  Thank you to the Ottawa Board of Trade for being great hosts!

Catch us tomorrow at the President's Breakfast, hosted by The Ottawa Hospital Foundation!

The Origins of “No White after Labour Day”

A long, long time ago, before the invention of sweet, sweet air conditioning, one way to beat-the-heat was to wear light-coloured clothing. Unfortunately, the city was a dirty place (coal!), so you only wore light colours if you a) escaped to your country home for the summer, or b) could afford to replace your whitest whites when they were inevitably ruined by city soot. Assuming you simply spent the summer in the countryside, you would have to trade your light-coloured attire for dark-coloured duds upon your return to the city in September, or risk ruining your favourite summer threads. Hence, no white after Labour Day!

Best of Luck to the HW Students!

This Friday was bittersweet in the Hendry Warren office.  While everyone had a serious case of "TGIF" before the long weekend, we were also sad to say goodbye to some of our students heading back to university for the Fall.  We made sure to say goodbye in true HW fashion with a Beer O'Clock.  Pictured below are a few of the faces that will be missing from our office in the upcoming months.  We wish them all the best in their upcoming semesters!

A reminder that our office will be closed on Monday, September 3rd.  Next week we will also be returning to our normal hours of 8:30 to 5:00, Monday through Friday.  The end of half-day Fridays is a true sign of Fall!

This Time Five Years Ago

Today we are taking a walk down memory lane to August 2013.  This time five years ago, the renovations at 881 Lady Ellen Place were complete and our boxes were packed at 442 Gilmour.  In fact, on today’s date in 2013, the staff were having a kick-off celebration to christen the new space.

When we first moved in to 881 Lady Ellen, we had endless space for firm get-togethers and other tenants.  Now, as we enter into our sixth year in the building, we have really grown into our space and are now in the midst of additional renovations!

In 2013, we never imagined how quickly we would grow and we often like to reminisce by looking at old pictures. If you look closely you will see a keepsake from our old office, which can still be found in one of our meeting rooms.

Golfing for a Cause

Last week we had the pleasure of attending the 26th Annual Golf Fundraiser for Serenity House. We had a great time getting to know the attendees, as well as learning more about the organization's great initiatives. Serenity House is a local addiction treatment centre that focuses on holistic treatment styles for men in the Ottawa area. Another Great Cottage Party for the Books

Summer is in full swing at Hendry Warren and we are making the most of it! Leaving behind the hustle and bustle of the city, the team ventured into cottage country last Friday for some well-deserved rest & relaxation. We traded in our calculators for appetizers by the lake and had a blast enjoying great food, great friends and great fun.
